Giving up your credit card information alone sets you up for surreptitious surveillance you may not even be aware of -- for e.g. weblining is a common discriminatory practice used against poor people in Western countries. Poor families are more likely to be denied loans, mortgages, etc. based on their credit card information. There's a wealth of information on this stuff, and good reason why people are concerned about privacy.

I do agree with you that we are hypocritical in the sense that we easily criticize citizens in other countries for willingly handing over their personal info, while we do the same thing without even being prompted.

It's impossible to escape digital surveillance entirely, but even so, people are right to have their concerns.
