Pinker has so many blind spots. His book, Enlightenment Now, is just a rehash of Better Angels — both come with their own assumptions of what “progress” means. Of course the world is getting better by Pinker’s narrow standards. I don’t know about you, but a longer life (one of his measurements of progress) doesn’t sound very appealing if it’s constantly filled with struggle and hardship. That just sounds torturous.
